What is Illuminate?

In the run-up to National Science Week, the BA, in association with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), is running Illuminate, a photography competition for all ages.

Use your imagination to capture colour in science, whether it’s the blue of a flask of copper sulphate solution, brilliant white of snow on a winter’s morning or the spectrum of oil on the surface of a puddle.

What subjects are acceptable?

National Science Week encompasses the sciences, social sciences (such as economics), maths, technology, engineering and medicine, so is very broad!

Colour in the world around us is the product of physical processes, natural or artificial. There is often a reason why something is the colour it is - maybe it is due to white light refracting through a rain drop, or it is a flower's way of attracting a pollinator. Or maybe it is a colour intended to stimulate a reaction in a person.

We want you to look at colour in the world around you, whether it is a natural or synthetic colour, and ask yourself why it is that colour, what that colour represents.
