Cory Black from Dumfries Academy has won a national competition with her poster telling scientists what she would like them to research. Young people across the UK were asked their opinions on the direction that science takes in the future and how they believe scientists should act by the BA as part of a competition launched to win an expenses-paid trip to the BA Festival of Science in Exeter this September. The theme of this year’s Festival is the responsibility of being a scientist.
In her poster, Cory asked scientists to look at ways of eradicating hunger whilst also solving the obesity problem. She also said she would like scientists to look at space exploration. Cory took part in the competition in preparation for the Dumfries & Galloway Science Challenge event in which she participated in the winning ‘DA Dynamics’ team.
Sharmila Banerjee, Manager of the Young People’s Programme at the BA said: "Cory’s poster was excellent and particularly interesting because she considered both sides to the issues she was highlighting. Although she implored scientists to develop cures for illnesses, she also seems to have recognised that scientific advances would lead to a population explosion."
Cory has won the opportunity to attend the BA Festival of Science, which takes place at the University of Exeter from 6-10 September. There, she can meet the UK’s top scientists and researchers and join in discussions on topics as diverse as the future of wind energy, the responsible use of animals in research and the challenges of using hypnosis.
