Science panto fun in the North East
Science panto
Panto season is here, so it’s time for men in dresses, terrible gags, corny songs, men dressed as women and… science?

On Saturday 11 December, the University of Teesside, Middlesbrough, hosted Hansel and Petal, an original pantomime written and produced by science education company InSCInc. The story tells the tale of budding botanist Petal and her troublesome brother Hansel who are trapped in an enchanted forest. Characters including the evil Deadly Nightshade, Dan de Lion and Mother Nature are all on hand, but will they help or hinder their escape?

SETPOINT North East, which sponsors the panto, has ensured that the pantomime remains true to its roots with lots of songs and slapstick humour.

“The panto format is an excellent way of engaging people, especially children,” says Colin Wilkinson, BA Regional Officer and SETPOINT (but not the panto dame).  “Hansel and Petal covers science topics like forces and pollination in a way that is fun and accessible to all.”

As well as this one-off public performance, the panto is also touring round a number of local schools, taking its festive science magic to thousands of children in the region.
