Lord Browne of Madingley, Group Chief Executive of BP plc, will take over as President of the BA in September 2006, it is announced today. He will take over from the current President, Frances Cairncross, at the end of the BA Festival of Science in Norwich.
‘I am delighted to become President of the BA,’ says Lord Browne. ‘Science, engineering and technology are at the heart of human progress. It is critical to enhance the public profile of those already involved in these fields, to attract the very best of the next generation, and to listen to the public's aspirations for what they can do for our world. I look forward to the challenges ahead.’
The BA is a UK-wide organisation dedicated to connecting science with people. It promotes openness about science in society and aims to engage and inspire people directly with science and technology and their implications through its activities, which include National Science Week, the BA Festival of Science and award schemes for young people.
Commenting on Lord Browne’s appointment, Professor Patrick Dowling, Chair of the BA Council, says: ‘We welcome Lord Browne as President-elect of the BA. Much of what people see and experience of science and technology is mediated through industrial innovation, and so we are pleased to appoint someone with such a distinguished engineering and business background.
‘At a time when energy supplies and climate change are such significant topics we look forward to taking the opportunity to offer a wider platform and discussion on these critical areas through our activities such as the BA Festival of Science and National Science Week.’
Lord Browne will give his Presidential Address at the BA Festival of Science in York in September 2007.
Lord Browne joins a list of distinguished Presidents who have included Professor Thomas Huxley, Professor Sir JJ Thomson, Professor Dorothy Hodgkin, Sir David Attenborough and Professor Robert Winston.
