The George Green Memorial Fund was set up in 1976 by Professor Lawrie Challis and colleagues from the Physics and Mathematics Departments, University of Nottingham, together with representatives from other organisations and professions in Nottingham. It was handed over to the BA in 2005, and is now administered by the BA Nottinghamshire Branch.

Present Aims

To achieve wider recognition of Green and publicise his achievements and his contributions to modern science and technology via this web site. To contribute to the public interest and understanding of science and mathematics.

The Fund depends upon sales of George Green's essays for its income.

Achievements

• Restoration of the derelict Green's Mill (where Green worked till age 38). Achieved in 1985 in partnership with the City of Nottingham Planning and Museum Departments, the Nottingham Civic Society, the Sneinton Environmental Society and contributions from other local and national organisations, including the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society.
• Dedication of a plaque to Green in Westminster Abbey.
• Dedication of a plaque in St Stephen's church, Sneinton, Nottingham, where Green is buried (see George Green's Grave).
• Creation of an Exhibition on the life, background and works of George Green by the Manuscripts Department of the University of Nottingham: available by arrangement for display in University departments, etc, with optional presentation or seminar; additions to archival material (see Archives).
• Support for the first modern biography of Green by D M Cannell. See References.
• Support for publication of George Green, Miller and Mathematician, 1793-1841, D M Cannell, Castle Museum, available from Green's Mill.
