Reading Science Week 2012

Join us for Reading Science Week to celebrate science, engineering and technology first hand with a range of fantastic events for everyone. Whether its watching science buskers in the town centre on Saturday afternoon, star gazing at Reading University, finding out about biodiversity in your garden at the Museum for English Rural Life or attending a prestigious public lecture at the University - there is something for everyone!

The following events will be taking place but more may be added nearer the time so watch this space!

Friday 9 March
Stargazing: explore the universe from the comfort of Reading 
18:00, Museum of English Rural Life, Redlands Road, Reading.

Fun for all the family, regardless of the weather.

Saturday 10 March
Science Busking: Get hands-on with science in the high street
12:00-15:00, Broad Street Reading
Come see science in action live in the centre of Reading with lots of fizzing, whizzing, banging and clanging right in front of your eyes! Science buskers will be performing lots of fun and funky science throughout the afternoon.

Saturday 10 March
MORE Stargazing: explore the universe from the comfort of Reading
18:00, Museum of English Rural Life, Redlands Road, Reading.
Ever wanted to explore the Universe but can't get a ride on a rocket? Join us for an evening of Star Gazing at the University of Reading, where local astronomers will use telescopes to guide you through views of the planets, stars and other delights of the night sky.


This event will be held outdoors so warm clothing and sensible shoes are advised. We will have the use of the pavilion building and hot drinks will be available. The site is wheelchair and pushchair accessible. Please note that what you see will depend on the amount of cloud cover on the night.

The structure of stuff is sweet

Come and learn the mysterious behaviour of the molecules in crystals using slinkies, marshmallows, coctail sticks and sweets!

Wednesday 14 March
Public lecture: Can changing your diet and lifestyle alter your cancer risk?

Professor Ian Rowland on whether certain foods can help lower the risk of developing cancer.

Thursday 15 March
Felgett seminar: Our world in motion
19:00, Palmer Building, Whiteknights Campus, University of Reading, Reading.
Two young researchers will be showing some of the exciting research happening at the University of Reading around the theme of Our World in Motion. The speakers will be Lesley Allison on Our Blue World in Motion: Ocean Circulation & Climate Change, and Murray Evans on How Motion Helps a Computer See.
