Bill Bryson is a superb communicator who, as a non-scientist, has made a major impact on the visibility and accessibility of science though his book A Short History of Nearly Everything. In A Short History of Nearly Everything, for which he won the Aventis Prize in 2004, Bill Bryson made a point of focusing on the lives of the scientists he was writing about, instead of the more technical details, in order to make it more interesting to the reader. With the support of the Royal Society of Chemistry the book was sent to all schools and colleges in the UK. Bill Bryson generously donated his royalties from these sales to establish a schools' science communication award, the RSC Bill Bryson Prize. Subsequently he was chosen as one of the winners of the prestigious EU Descartes prize for science communication.
