In parallel with a distinguished research career - her expertise lies in the role of inflammatory processes in malignancy, especially cancers of the ovaries and skin - Professor Balkwill has long been a dedicated science communicator, having authored 13 children's science books, including the Enjoy Your Cells series, and spent time in South Africa determining the educational needs of local communities affected by HIV and AIDS.
In previous years Professor Balkwill has been the recipient of both the EMBO Award for Communications, and the Royal Society Michael Faraday prize in 2005, again in honour of her outstanding contribution to science communication. She is Director of the Centre for the Cell, a science centre for the public in Whitechapel.
