Lord Sainsbury has given exceptional service as Science Minister. He was first appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Science and Innovation in July 1998, with responsibility for the Office of Science and Technology, Research Councils and space matters. He left the DTI in November 2006.
David Sainsbury has been a major force during that period in promoting the importance of science to government, the economy and society, and has overseen a major expansion in public funding directed towards science and innovation. He has sought also to increase the focus and impact of the many organisations and schemes which undertake public engagement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, both through his public office and his charitable activities, encouraging initiatives such as the Science and Engineering Ambassadors Scheme.
