The Science and Engineering Club at Hagley Catholic High School had its entrepreneurial spirit rewarded at the end of last term. Some of its students were announced runners-up in the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts (NESTA)’s ‘Making a Mint’ competition, which challenged teams to make as much money as possible from a packet of mint seeds.

The competition gave entrants two months in which to come up with ideas for turning a profit from their seeds.  The competition was designed to educate them on the science behind growing a plant from seed, as well as teaching them valuable entrepreneurial skills.

As well as selling mint products to staff, pupils and parents, the group gave up their Saturday to sell their mint products at the Three Counties Show in Malvern. The students put together a display about the project and how they had made their mint.

Pupils grew the mint from seeds and got cuttings of other mint varieties including apple, pineapple and eau de cologne. They sold these plants individually and together with other herbs to produce herb gardens. They also made potpourri bags from dried mint, greeting cards and tags as well as bookmarks suitably sized for recipe books that had a sprig of mint and either recipe ideas or information about the mint. They also produced mint recipe books and an information card about other uses for mint.
