1) NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK FEEDBACK

All over the UK, hundreds of thousands of people took part in science events to celebrate National Science Week 2005 (11-20 March). From Einstein Birthday parties to science extravaganzas, people of all ages were experimenting, discussing and getting their hands dirty, with even more events than last year. And if you didn’t make it to an event, you may have seen National Science Week on TV – even Paul O’Grady and Michael Parkinson carried out some special National Science Week experiments on ITV’s The Paul O’Grady Show.
BA science clubs got involved in a range of activities to celebrate National Science Week.

The science department at Magdalen College School in Brackley held a themed activity at lunchtime every day, which included slime day, blood day, DNA day and a spaghetti challenge. Meanwhile the staff, in celebration of Einstein year, all wore Science Week T-shirts emblazoned with a picture of Einstein.

In the North East of Scotland around 8,000 from 184 schools, took part in the Highland Stag Challenge during National Science Week. The challenge involved building newspaper stags as tall as possible in teams of three in just 30 minutes!

Gurjit was awarded a place at the fair, which runs from 9-13 May, after impressing judges at the BA CREST Science Fair in London back in February with his project testing equipment to measure the dose of radiation that cancer cells received during radiotherapy.

9) BA CALLS FOR GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF PUBLIC'S ATTITUDE

The BA has called for a better understanding of what underlies people's attitudes towards science. The call follows the survey into public attitudes towards science published by the Office of Science and Technology (OST) and MORI in March and coincides with the release of the BA's comprehensive review of research in science in society, Connecting Science (section 5 of the review focuses on Science Eduction).
