News from the Young People's Programme
On 16 September five British teenagers flew to Moscow to take part in the EU Contest for Young Scientists.  A schools-industry initiative started by the BA has been picked out for a prestigious award present by Tony Blair. Science is a colourful subject, both literally and in its exciting discoveries, so as part of National Science Week 2006, we are launching Illuminate, a photography competition aimed at capturing the colour in science.  On Friday 21st April 2006 the Scottish CREST Award Final took place at the University of Abertay, Dundee.  Two young scientists from the UK recently won the opportunity to meet like-minded people from across the globe at the London International Youth Science Forum.  Lydia Arnold, 18, Greater Manchester, has been selected to appear in Exceptional Youth, an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London.  The BA is delighted to support the Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto, which was launched by the Secretary of State for Educational and Skillls in November 2006. Holly Batchelor is out in Albuquerque, USA, representing the UK at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).  Gurjit Singh Sidhu from Dundee headed off to Phoenix, to represent our top young scientists at ISEF 2005.  On June 28th pupils from schools around the North West attended the BA CREST regional awards, held at the University of Salford, Greater Manchester. This event, sponsored by AstraZeneca, is one of many regional Crest finals that have been happening across the UK.  The 2005 Scottish Final of the BA CREST Awards took place at Dundee University on Thursday, 21st April. With 50 projects entered, 27 of them at Bronze level, this was the largest Scottish final ever. All over the UK, hundreds of thousands of people took part in science events to celebrate National Science Week 2005 (11-20 March). |
