The world is round: Adventures in mathematical sculpture
13. Description of the core message of your event and key topics to be covered (c.100 words):
This will be an adaptation of the talk I was nominated (though not chosen!) to give at TEDxBrighton 2012: "Maths can be a creative, awe-inspiring field of exploration, yet many people are turned off the subject for life by their experiences at school. Despite struggling for years with mental arythmetic, Nick Sayers got the geometry and algebra bug at an early age through using computers. Ever since, he's spent his life exploring the beautiful symmetry of spheres, which he's innovatively constructed from a variety of recycled and repurposed materials. Initially making small hand-held sculptures, he's delivered public art commissions at schools and is now working on big-build dome projects, one of which might eventually span the globe..."
