Speaker: Jens Marklof, Professor of Mathematical Physics, Bristol University.

When one thinks of a crystal, the impression is of a very rigid structure where everything is ‘in its place’. Like other objects that we are familiar with, they are are made up of microscopic particles – from molecules and atoms to electrons and a whole zoo of other elementary particles. However, at this microscopic level, there is chaos and randomness. How can we understand how the observable structure emerges from the random behaviour of its components?
This is a fundamental question, and Professor Marklov’s research contributes to the understanding of the laws of nature.

Professor Marklof was recently elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Free entry.

Note: this is a new venue for us - there's a bar and plenty of room, but we need a good turnout to make it work, so please spread the word! http://southbankclub.webs.com/
