JOB TITLE: Evaluation Assistant (British Science Festival)

DURATION: 10-13 September 2019, plus a half-day of training on Friday 6 September.

CORE HOURS: Hours will be assigned between 16:00-22:00 and will be confirmed on appointment.

RATE: £9.00 per hour

The British Science Festival is Europe’s longest standing science Festival, travelling to a different place in the United Kingdom each year. The British Science Association is recruiting Evaluation Assistants to work during the British Science Festival 2019. The Festival will be held in Coventry city centre and at the University of Warwick from 10-13 September 2019, hosted by the University of Warwick. This role is based in various locations in Coventry city centre.

Evaluation Assistants will attend drop-in, evening events at the Festival and interact with event attendees in a friendly manner to conduct short interviews about their experiences. Training will be provided.

Job description

Main duties

  • Interview representative samples of event attendees about their experiences of British Science Festival 2019 events using evaluation forms provided
  • Be responsible for the security of collected evaluation data when evaluating British Science Festival 2019 events, ensuring completed evaluation surveys are given to the Evaluation Officer at the end of events
  • Report to Evaluation Officer and assist with other relevant duties as required

  • Good interpersonal skills
  • An ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience, tact and skill in dealing with the public
  • An ability to stay calm under pressure and show initiative to solve problems
  • An ability to work flexibly
  • Good level of spoken English


  • Previous experience of conducting interviews for evaluation purposes
  • Previous experience of approaching members of the public for evaluation/research purposes
  • Knowledge of Coventry & Warwickshire, particularly Coventry city centre

Terms and conditions

The Evaluation Assistants will be working at the British Science Festival in Coventry city centre between 10-13 September 2019.

The assignment is offered at a salary of £9.00 per hour. Your core hours will be scheduled between 16:00-22:00, depending on the duration of events, and the various locations in Coventry city centre where the events will be held. If successful, your hours will be fully outlined in your offer letter.

The half-day of training on Friday 6 September will be paid at the above rate and the BSA will reimburse reasonable travel costs incurred in attending the training day.

The BSA can provide information about accommodation on site for the duration of the Festival if required.
