It is with sadness that the Trustees and staff of the British Science Association heard the news of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on 9 April.

The Duke of Edinburgh was a former President of the Association, in 1950 - 1951 (when the organisation was previously known as the British Association for the Advancement of Science).  

He gave his Presidential Address at the Association’s Annual Meeting in Edinburgh in September of 1951, whilst still a serving officer in the Royal Navy, and it remains one of the most well-received and widely shared speeches in the Association’s history.

His Royal Highness was known for his interest in and support of science and technology, and it was fitting that his Address coincided with the 100^th anniversary of The Great Exhibition, the famous event that was the brainchild of Prince Albert, another former President of the Association.
