Overall purpose of the job

The British Science Association’s (BSA) vision is for science to be seen as a fundamental part of culture. We believe that both science and society will benefit if there is a wider group of people involved in science, whether as leaders, influencers and researchers or as members of the public who are supportive, critical, playful, etc.

We are active throughout the UK and our staff travel regularly. We work with over 600 volunteers and hundreds of partner organisations. We are increasingly delivering our activities and programmes online, making more use of digital platforms, online processes and social media.

We are seeking an IT Officer to provide a full and up-to-date IT service to enable our team to work flexibly, securely and efficiently so they can deliver the BSA’s goals. To begin with, you will focus on the immediate day-to-day functioning of the equipment our staff use. You will be supported by our external IT specialists who will help you develop your knowledge and skills so that you can take on increasing amounts of responsibility. Ultimately you will be responsible for sourcing and maintaining all our equipment and for purchasing software, hosting and support services.

You will also have the opportunity to play a full role in wider organisational development and change. You will be able to lead on areas of work that interest you or suit your future career plans.

This role would be ideal for someone in their second or third IT support role who is looking for an opportunity to accelerate their career. This role offers an unusual combination of the autonomy that arises from being the only IT specialist and the support that arises from being part of a specialist team.
