They say that talent borrows but genius steals so when Teri Forey and Louise Coley from the Nottinghamshire branch were looking for a new way to do SciComm in Nottingham, they looked around the other branches and stole the idea of SciBar with pride. After starting in April 2014, the last Wednesday of every month has seen The Vat & Fiddle pub has seen scientists from industry and academia talking about their work.

If you've not had the opportunity to go to a SciBar event yet, the idea is that whoever speaks has to talk at a "pub level" so that anyone could walk in and understand what's going on. So, no jargon and no acronyms! Then the public get to ask the scientist questions about their talk. The aim is to get scientist together with the public in an informal setting. Over the three years that it's been running in Nottingham, subjects have ranged from zombie genomics to sustainable skyscrapers and from synthetic biology to the psychology of drinking (very prescient in the pub!

With the format settled on, a venue had to be found and The Vat & Fiddle, the brewery tap of Castle Rock, was the perfect place. Widely regarded as one of the best pubs in town due to its excellent range of beers, from Castle Rock's finest to a mix of guest ales, and friendly atmosphere. It's proved to be the perfect home for the event, ensuring that SciBar is as much about the bar as it is about the science.

Over the three years, SciBar has gone from strength to strength with a wide range of scientists from academia and industry speaking on different topics coming from as far away as Sheffield and London as well as the two local universities, the British Geological Survey and Rolls Royce. Plus even a special appearance from Matt Parker from the Festival of the Spoken Nerd. There have been audience members from all walks of life, a few really nice beers drunk and some fascinating debates. So, join us in wishing Nottingham SciBar a happy third birthday and if you're ever in the city on the final Wednesday of the month, head on down to The Vat & Fiddle for an interesting talk and some interesting beers.
