Tickets for a special 10k Run to the Deep live race have gone on sale today. Following the virtual app's popular launch during British Science Week, we set up a crowdfunding campaign in the hopes of holding a live 10k race event to celebrate World Oceans Day

We're pleased to announce that the money raised from this and merchandise sales have allowed us to go ahead with the race this summer. It will take place in the early evening of Friday 8 June in Hyde Park.

Run to the Deep will be an exclusive, chip-timed event for up to 500 runners. Tickets can be purchased here.

Race details:

  • 10k distance, taking place at 18:30 hrs on 8 June at the Bandstand in Hyde Park

  • Registration from 17:30

  • An accompanying free app to participate in the virtual ocean exploration experience

  • Course: The course is all on tarmac or hard gravel pathway. The course is made up of two laps, is marshalled, signed with arrows and kilometre markers.

  • Bag drop, water station and toilets (20p required for toilets)

  • Race ticket cost: £25, which includes the entrance fee, a themed medal and a goodie bag to take home

  • Cash bar: quench your thirst and bring your friends for an early evening sunset celebration of World Oceans Day;

  • The cost of your ticket is a donation to the British Science Association, a registered charity (212479).

For the full, immersive experience we are encouraging all runners with a smart phone to download the accompanying Run to the Deep app, which will be available to download for free on iOS and Android on 8 June.

The app, narrated by explorer Pierre-Yves Cousteau, takes you on a journey from the sea surface to the Marianas Trench – the deepest known part of the ocean – as you cover the 10k distance. The audio features alien creatures, amazing seascapes, and human exploration stories as you "descend" to the ocean floor.

Run to the Deep aims to connect people with the ocean in an engaging, fun and light-touch way - by delivering entertaining and informative audio content as you run. We hope that runners will first and foremost enjoy the journey but be inspired to reduce their plastic consumption and find out more about ocean conservation projects that they can get involved with in the future.
