Elected members Expand Professor Brian Ratcliffe Brian is Emeritus Professor of Nutrition at the Robert Gordon University of Aberdeen. Brian studied biological sciences for his honours degree and was awarded his PhD for research in nutrition at the Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health, University of Aberdeen. He was a nutritional scientist at the National Institute for Research in Dairying and then at the Institute of Food Research. He held the post of Senior Lecturer in Nutrition at the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University) before moving to the University. Brian is an active member of the BSA’s Aberdeen branch. Dr Suzi Gage Suzi Gage is a post-doctoral researcher at Liverpool University, investigating associations between substance use and mental health. Suzi is aiming to assess whether associations seen between lifestyle behaviours (such as smoking, alcohol use or illicit drug use) and mental health outcomes are causal in nature. Suzi is interested in public engagement, blogs for the Guardian and has her own podcast called, 'Say why to drugs' which tackles one substance per episode - providing information about what we know - the harms, but also potential benefits of these substances. Dr Sarah Main Sarah is Executive Director of the Campaign for Science and Engineering and oversees all aspects of CaSE’s work. She enjoys talking to politicians, scientists and the media about science and acting as a channel of understanding between their different worlds. Sarah started out as a molecular biologist researching mechanisms of cancer, DNA replication and virology for Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council in London and Cambridge. She moved in to science policy at the Medical Research Council working on research funding boards, overarching investment strategy and research careers. She gained first-hand experience of spending review preparations whilst on secondment to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), where she wrote a report on the leveraging power of public investment in science and research for the UK economy. Mr Colin Wilkinson Colin has been a science communicator for 20 years, with some experience in the steel industry, working across analytical, research and technical areas across the full process. He has worked with the BSA for all of that time in various paid and voluntary roles: Regional Officer, CREST Coordinator, Branch Chair and Section Recorder. He has also worked in higher education running a SETPOINT and then with 27 universities and colleges trying (together) to adjust access and progression routes for vocational learners. He is currently supporting Fusion STEM as the new Regional CREST Support Organisation for North East England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and is a CREST assessor. Colin also acts as the Local Consumer Advocate who champions water and sewerage service consumers’ interests in North East England, for the Consumer Council for Water, and as such is a member of Northumbrian Water’s Water Forum and Hartlepool Water’s Independent Advisory Panel. He is vice-chair of Arthritis Research UK’s Patient Insight Network, and the patient member of their Expert Working Group on Pain. Colin has particular interests in equal access to services / places for people with disabilities, and finding better ways to harness the power of multiple disciplines to solve intractable problems.

Vice presidents Expand Stephen Nuttall - Vice-President for Engagement Stephen Nuttall has worked in the media and technology sectors for 30 years, most recently being the Senior Director leading the EMEA region at Google/YouTube and prior to that as Sky's Group Commercial Director. He has a degree in Physics and Applied Physics with Electronics from the University of Nottingham and an MBA from the Scuola di Direzione Aziendale at Bocconi University in Milan. Deborah Bull, Vice-President for Cultural Development Deborah joined King's College London in 2012 following a long and successful career in the arts, first as performer and, more recently, as creative leader and cultural commentator. She is also Vice-President for Cultural Development for the BSA. She danced with The Royal Ballet from 1981 until 2001, and joined the Royal Opera House Executive in 2001, becoming Creative Director in 2008 and taking the lead on the organisation’s Olympic programming. Over the last fifteen years, her work for television and radio includes the award winning The Dancer's Body and Travels with my Tutu (BBC2) and, for BBC Radio 3 and 4, programmes on topics as diverse as dance, the law and ageing. Following her appearance at the Oxford Union in 1996 and a subsequent invitation to deliver the Annual Arts Council Lecture the same year, she has written and spoken on the arts across a wide range of media and in 1998 she was awarded a CBE for her contribution to the arts. She has served on Arts Council England, as a Governor of the BBC, as a judge for the 2010 Man Booker Prize and is currently a member of the governing body of the Arts. As Assistant Principal (London), Deborah Bull provides leadership across King's College London to extend and enrich its collaborations with the cultural sector; and leads on development of the university's external engagement within London, maximising the potential of King's location at the heart of the city. Professor Louise Archer, Vice-President for Education Louise is Professor of Sociology of Education at Kings College London and leads the ASPIRES project, a longitudinal ESRC on children’s science aspirations and career choice. She is interested in identities and inequalities of ‘race’, gender and social class within compulsory and post-compulsory education. Her most recent book is on Urban Youth and Education.
Chair Expand Lord David Willetts David served as the Member of Parliament for Havant from 1992 to March 2015. He has worked at HM Treasury, the Number 10 Policy Unit, and served as Paymaster General in the last Conservative Government. He has also previously served as the Shadow Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities & Skills, Shadow Secretary of State for Work & Pensions and for Trade & Industry. From May 2010 to July 2014 David served as Minister for Universities and Science. He was appointed as a Privy Councillor in June 2010. He is Executive Chairman of the Resolution Foundation and a Visiting Professor at King’s College London.
