Current inquiry: Equity in the STEM workforce

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Diversity and Inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) has launched its inquiry into Equity in the UK STEM workforce. The APPG has published a Data Analysis Brief on the diversity and representation of the STEM (including health) workforce as it stood in 2019. This brief informed the Call for Evidence, which closed to submissions on 29 January 2021. The APPG is currently analysing all evidence submissions and will be publishing a final report in Summer 2021.

Full details of the inquiry can be found here.

A full recording of the launch event on 10 November 2020 can be seen here.

Previous inquiry: Equity in STEM education

On 23 June 2020, the APPG launched the 'Equity in STEM education’ report. The report was published after a 15-month inquiry gathering and analysing evidence on whether the education system and schools provide equal opportunities for students of all ages to learn STEM subjects in England.

The report includes five key findings and six recommendations that highlight the need for a more joined-up approach by Government to tackle the causes of inequity in STEM education and an urgency to take a wider, more holistic view of inequity beyond the lens of gender, economic disadvantage or ethnicity. Full details can be found here

About the Group

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM aims to promote the inclusion and progression of people from diverse backgrounds in STEM, and to encourage government, parliamentarians, academics, businesses and other stakeholders to work towards a STEM sector that is representative of the population. We also want to consider and influence changes in policy that will lead to this outcome.

As part of its work on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM, the BSA acts as secretariat for the Group. The Group is made up of Members of Parliament and Lords, and is a focus for collaboration with businesses and other organisations in the STEM sector.

The Group's next AGM will take place on Monday 21 June at 15.30hrs.

If you wish to attend the forthcoming AGM, please email us at [email protected].
