All-Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity & Inclusion in STEM

About the Group

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) in STEM aims to promote the inclusion and progression of people from diverse backgrounds in STEM, and to encourage government, parliamentarians, academics, businesses and other stakeholders to work towards a STEM sector that is representative of the population. We also want to consider and influence changes in policy that will lead to this outcome.

As part of its work on equality, diversity and inclusion across the science and science engagement sectors, the British Science Association (BSA) acts as secretariat for the Group. The Group is made up of Members of Parliament and Lords, and is a focus for collaboration with businesses and other organisations in STEM.

Panel discussion - Tuesday 18 March 2025

The first event of the APPG on Diversity and Inclusion in STEM re-established in the new parliament took place on Tuesday 18 March 2025. The event included a panel discussion on EDI strategies in STEM and networking session.

The following Parliamentarians were in attendance: Samantha Niblett MP,  Baroness Brown of Cambridge, Baroness Verma, Sadik Al-Hassan MP,  Lord Watson of Invergowrie, Baroness Freeman of Steventon.

Baroness Brown opened the meeting by welcoming attendees and explaining that the APPG on Diversity & Inclusion in STEM had convened this session to explore how EDI strategies can help STEM organisations become more inclusive and equitable. She emphasised that this discussion was especially urgent given recent developments in the US, where EDI initiatives have been rolled back.

Baroness Brown then introduced Samantha Niblett MP as the new Chair of the APPG, noting her extensive experience in technology and her dedication to advancing gender equity in STEM.

Samantha Niblett welcomed attendees and expressed her gratitude to Chi Onwurah MP for her leadership of the APPG from 2018-2024. She shared that Labour: Women in Tech was inspired by the APPG’s earlier report, which continues to influence EDI strategies today.

After the opening remarks, we held a panel discussion on EDI strategies in STEM. The discussion was chaired by Karen Blake, former co-CEO at Tech Talent Charter, and the panellists were:

  • Samantha Niblett MP

  • Dr Adam Vasco, Director of Diversity & Inclusion, University of Wolverhampton

  • Nisha Marwaha, Director of People Relations and DEI at Virgin Media O2

  • Dr Roni Savage, Chief Executive and Founder, Jomas Associates

After the panel discussion, Professor Nira Chamberlain provided his closing remarks. Nira reflected on his experience with the APPG, explaining how his research treats EDI as a science problem.
