Find out which material is the strongest
In this project you will test different materials from different clothes to see which one is the strongest.
You should begin by choosing your clothes. For example, you could test a piece of denim from a pair of jeans, or a piece of cotton from a T-shirt.
Make sure you use old clothes, or someone may get cross when you cut pieces out of their favourite T-shirt!
You should cut pieces of material from the clothes. These are called your samples. To make sure you carry out a fair test, you should make sure your samples are all the same size.
CREST Silver Award – typically 30 hours of project work
Investigate if some jeans are tougher than others
To start you will need to work out which properties you want to test. For example, you could test the strength of seams in a pair of denim jeans, the tear resistance of denim, or you could try to work out how easily denim wears down by rubbing it on a rough surface.
This will involve some research into properties of materials, particularly strength.
- Decide which properties you think are most important for a pair of jeans.
- Do you buy jeans for their looks, or because you think they’ll last a long time?
CREST Gold Award – typically 70+ hours of project work
Compare the properties of different fabrics made from different fibres
Different fabrics could be woven or knitted fabrics. Different fibres could be cotton and wool (natural) and nylon (synthetic).
You should investigate physical properties of the fabrics (such as strength; tear resistance; resistance to abrasion; thermal resistance) and chemical properties (such as how easy it is to dye and its resistance to fading due to sunlight and/or washing; how resistant it is to chemicals).
You should start by picking your samples.
